The history of local 89 starts in 1927

It started with five mechanics working for Otis Canada Inc.. At that time the hourly rate was $0.33 an hour for a mechanic and helpers earned 50% of mechanics rate. The regular work week was one of 60 hours.

Once the company found out that five of their mechanics were planning to form a local union, the said employees were transferred to different towns in the province of Quebec. This transfer only served to further our brothers conviction that founding a local union was of the highest importance. Our five founding brothers would meet every weekend and succeeded in establishing our local. The charter of our local was granted on February 7, 1928 and revised on March 29, 1965. A year later in 1929, a mechanic earned $1.00 an hour and worked a 44 hour week.

Since the establishment of our local, we have negotiated every  contract for our trade with the goal of continually improving the salaries, benefits and working conditions of our members.

Seventy three years later we are still here representing the majority of workers in our industry, tirelessly striving  for greater goals. We have the highest salaries of all the construction trades in the province of Quebec that being $28.45 an hour for a mechanic  with a regular work week of forty hours. Outside the regular work hours of 8:00 am. to 5:00 pm. we earn a premium of double time or time and a half.

 We were the first to have a complete pension and welfare plan created in 1962 which is the envy of all construction trades. Our pension plan presently has assets of over 650 million dollars for 2,300 active international elevator men across Canada.

Our local union office is manned by three people a business manager, business representative, and office secretary. These people are there to run the day to day operations of our local as well as answering the needs of the members.

We hold union meetings the second Tuesday of every month where all initiated members are invited to come and participate. We value the opinions and input of are fellow members.

All of our activities go back to the early years when our local was first formed. We perpetuate the traditions of camaraderie and fraternity. We owe the success of events to the broad participation of our fellow brothers which only goes to prove that we are but one large family. We are conscious of the importance of fostering the bonds which unite us in this local and throughout international. 

Our school  offers many courses which lead to international mechanics accreditation for those who so desire. This international mechanics accreditation permits our members the chance to work as a mechanic in many different cities throughout North America.

L'Histoire du local 89 commença en 1927

Cinq mécaniciens travaillaient pour la compagnie Otis Canada Inc.. A cette époque,  le tarif horaire était de 0.33$ de l'heure et la semaine de travail était de 60 heures.  Un apprenti gagnait 50% du salaire d’un mécanicien.

Lorsque la compagnie apprit que cinq employés planifiaient fonder un local syndical, ces derniers furent transférés dans différentes villes de la province de Québec. Ce transfert convaincu nos cinq confrères de l’importance du projet.  Ils se réunissaient donc chaque fin de semaine et fondèrent le local syndical.   La charte du local fut octroyée le 7 février 1928 et revalidée le 29 mars 1965.  Un an plus tard en 1929 , un mécanicien gagnait 1.00$ de l'heure et travaillait 44 heures par semaine.

Depuis la fondation du notre local 89, nous avons négocié toutes les ententes affectant notre corps de métier avec l’objectif d'améliorer les conditions de travail de nos membres.

Soixante treize ans plus tard, nous sommes toujours actifs, nous continuons de représenter la majorité des travailleurs de notre industrie.  Le tarif horaire est le meilleur de tous les corps de métier de la construction, soit 28.45$ de l'heure et la semaine de travail est 40 heures.  Nous demeurons presque les seuls de l’industrie de la construction pour qui une journée de travail est de 8 heures.  Les primes de temps double ou temps et demi entre en vigueur une fois la journée normale de travail d’un mécanicien complétée.

Nous furent les premier à obtenir un plan d'avantages sociaux des plus que complet créer 1962.   La réserve de notre plan est actuellement de 650 millions de dollar pour 2,300 membres actifs à travers le pays.

La permanence du local est assurée par trois personnes soit un gérant, un agent d'affaires, et une secrétaire.  Ces personnes sont à votre service, ils  sont là pour vous écouter et vous conseiller.

Concernant les activités du local 89, nous tenons une rencontre mensuelle, le deuxième mardi de chaque mois.  Vous y êtes tous les bienvenus.

Toutes ces actives existent depuis les premières années de fondation du local 89.  Nous perpétuons la tradition dans la fraternité et la cordialité.  Le succès de chacun de ces  évènements repose sur votre participation et démontre, sans aucun doute, que nous formons une grande famille.  Nous sommes conscients de l’importance d’entretenir les liens qui nous unissent à travers notre profession.

Notre école offre des cours de perfectionnement qui peuvent permettre à ceux qui le désir d’obtenir leur accréditation de mécanicien international.   Cette accréditation  permet de travailler dans différentes villes en Amérique du nord.
